The Artist's Eye:
Water, sky, the transient effect of light, how it affects color and mood: this is what I see when I paint the landscape.
My process as a painter combines a meditative response to the subject with an impulse to order it. Rhythm, line, shape and the oscillation of color enliven the image.
Sometimes I depart from strict observation and treat the subject as a remembered place or a state of mind, bringing a story telling quality to the picture. Still life offers a chance to construct a drama.
For six years I have led painting trips to the island of Vieques, off Puerto Rico (see Tours link) where I have enjoyed painting the Caribbean and tropical vegetation. I've also found wonderful subjects on painting trips to Italy, Ireland, Portugal, and to Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
I live and work in Massachusetts and exhibit my paintings in the Boston area. (For more information, see Contact page.)
